Sunderland duo has been discharged after disappointing

Former Sunderland players have been released following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.

Tom Flanagan and Aiden O’Brien have been informed that their contracts with League One club Shrewsbury Town will not be extended following a 19th-place finish this season.

Flanagan, a 32-year-old central defender and Northern Ireland international, joined Sunderland in 2018 and made 115 appearances in all competitions over three and a half seasons before leaving midway through the 2021-22 season. Flanagan had suffered with injuries this season.

O’Brien, a 30-year-old attacker, joined Sunderland in 2020 but only stayed for a season and a half before being released while the Black Cats were still in League One. The Republic of Ireland international’s best performance in red and white came in the Carabao Cup against Blackpool, a Championship team at the time.

Flanagan and O’Brien join former Sunderland players Connor Wickham and Kazenga LuaLua on the free agency list, following their release by Charlton Athletic.
