Met police officer faces court charged with sexually assaulting girl

A court hearing is scheduled for a current Metropolitan Police officer who is being accused of sexual offences that occurred in the 1980s.

The force’s South Area Command employee, Pc Anthony Rowley, 51, is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, when he will be charged with four charges of sexual assault on a girl under the age of 14.

The claims, which concern a single girl and are purported to have happened in Croydon between 1988 and 1989, were brought to the attention of the police in May of last year.

Rowley was charged on Tuesday, February 27, after being detained on June 1 of last year. His duty has been halted.

“I recognise the serious concern this news will have, and I can assure local people that officers acted quickly on receipt of the allegations and that inquiries are ongoing,” stated Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, Croydon’s chief police officer.

“At this point, I wouldn’t be appropriate to make any more comments. No material or information that could taint court proceedings should be disclosed.”
