Police were called to Ipswich Avenue in Sutton Heath, near Woodbridge, just before 21:00 BST on Wednesday, to reports of a stabbing outside a home.
The victim, a man aged 37, died at the scene, despite the best efforts of paramedics, said Suffolk Police.
A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
Suffolk Police said it was an isolated incident and the victim and suspect were understood to have been known to each other.
The estate, on the former RAF Woodbridge airbase site, has a mix of civilian and military homes.
