The attack, described by Nottinghamshire Police as “horrendous”, happened at about 17:20 GMT on Wednesday in Forest Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield.
Officers arrested a 33-year-old man at the nearby Picture House pub on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
The 44-year-old victim was said to have been pulled to the ground and then attacked.
He remains at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with serious and life-changing injuries to his face.
The force is urging potential witnesses to come forward.
Eye witnesses are to come forward and give their testimonies so that police will take necessary action.
