At the bottom of the League Two standings is Swindon Town. The Robins have only achieved two league wins this season after 18 games.
Mark Kennedy led Town at the beginning of the season, but after a string of disappointing performances, he was fired in late October. Ian Holloway, a former Premier League fan favourite, took over as Lincoln City’s manager. But under the new boss, things aren’t exactly looking much better.
Since taking over as Swindon’s manager, Holloway has yet to earn a single victory, leaving the Robins to prop up the league table. The Wiltshire team may be headed for the National League if their current performance holds up.
Swindon suffering disastrous campaign
The County Ground had a busy summer. There were many arrivals and departures as Kennedy assembled a team he believed could contend for the top spot in League Two. Regardless of their recent setbacks, it’s reasonable to assume that a team of Swindon’s magnitude would wish to be a serious contender for promotion.
The attention was drawn to marquee additions like Gavin Kilkenny, Ollie Clarke, and Daniel Butterworth. High hopes were also raised by a strong preseason, as Town won five games and lost just two while getting ready for the season. Unfortunately, the league would not accept this form.
The former Premier League team is now perilously close to the relegation zone with only two victories in their first 13 games. After a 2-1 loss against Salford City, the owner, Clem Morfuni, had had enough and ordered Kennedy to leave.
However, Morfuni had a strategy in mind, as he promptly appointed Holloway on the same day that he fired Kennedy. The former Blackpool manager was brought in to calm the ship and leave everything in order for the next long-term manager, initially signing a contract until the end of the season.
But in his first five games, Holloway has lost three of them, drawn two, and failed to record a league victory. Although he was able to lead the Robins to the next round of the EFL Trophy, Swindon is starting to stray further from safety, therefore the league will need to be the main emphasis.
Swindon hit rock bottom after Colchester embarrassment
Town’s situation worsened on Tuesday night when they fell behind 4-0 in the first half of their road game against Colchester United. The performance left fans feeling dissatisfied, and Holloway himself expressed his disapproval of his team’s performance.
“I haven’t seen that from my lot; I’ve seen mistakes, and I’ve seen us come back and turn it around, but that was unacceptable, and I’m shocked,” the Bristol manager stated after the crushing loss.
As a result, some have questioned whether the former Crystal Palace manager is qualified to manage the enormous challenge of keeping Swindon in the Football League. His decision to start a team that was strikingly similar to the one that played 120 minutes with ten men just three days before the Colchester hammering baffled supporters.
Fans were alarmed to see the Robins drop to the bottom of the League Two standings for the first time this season as a result of the outcome. Although Holloway was brought in to help stabilise the ship, the ship continued to sink under his direction.
