According to Sam Morshead of The Moonraker, Jamie Russell, the head of football for Swindon Town, is expected to leave the team to join Salford City.
After losing to Morecambe this past weekend, the League Two team is now mired in a relegation struggle with Carlisle United and is at the bottom of the standings.
At the beginning of the season, the team fired former Lincoln City manager Mark Kennedy, but Ian Holloway hasn’t seen an improvement in the team’s performance.
With just two victories this season and the lowest goal differential outside of the bottom two, Swindon might be eliminated from the EFL the following year. Since Sandro di Michele’s resignation in 2023, Russell has been in charge of football choices. He has presided over the lengthy interim period at the end of the previous season under Gavin Gunning, as well as the hiring of Michael Flynn, Mark Kennedy, and Ian Holloway.
He reportedly accepted a position at League Two rivals Salford City, which is why he left.
A club in decline
The decline of Swindon Town has been swift. It is not too long ago that the club were looking forward to a play-off campaign under Ben Garner. However, window after window the club have consistently allowed their best players to leave the club and replaced them with players that are not at the same quality or fall into the “project player” category. The issue with the latter is that if there is no consistency in the coaching then there is unlikely to be any serious improvements in the players.
The club have also faced charges and been accused of mismanagement behind the scenes.
The situation is dire, and if they are able to fend off relegation this season, unless something dramatically changes such as a club sale, then I fear it may just be kicking the can down the road.
