Man who departed Swindon Town earlier this year to land…

Cheltenham Town intend to recruit the Welshman to Gloucestershire to replace Darrell Clarke following their relegation from League Two. They are now in the fourth tier, alongside Port Vale, Fleetwood Town, and Carlisle United.

Flynn, 43, left Swindon Town in mid-January and has since considered his next move in the game. He was in charge of the County Ground for eight months and won nine of his 33 matches.

According to GloucestershireLive, he has been picked as the guy who will be in charge of the Robins’ dugout for the upcoming season. He was reportedly questioned earlier this week alongside two other unknown candidates and is anticipated to be offered a two-year contract.

Flynn spent his playing days as a midfielder for the likes of Wigan Athletic, Gillingham, Blackpool, Huddersfield Town, Bradford City and Newport County before hanging up his boots in 2018 after making over 400 appearances.

He delved into the coaching world with the latter and worked his way up to becoming their manager.

The Newport-born man spent four years with his local team and guided them to the play-off final twice during his tenure. However, they were beaten at Wembley on both occasions by Tranmere Rovers and Morecambe.

Flynn left the Exiles in October 2021 and was out of the game for four months when Walsall re-signed him.

He oversaw 68 games for the Saddlers, winning 30.9% of them, before leaving.

Swindon Town named him last summer, but his time with the Robins did not go as planned, and he was released this winter.

Cheltenham Town will be seeking to be promoted from the fourth division on their maiden attempt.

Flynn is an experienced Football League coach, and while his most recent stints with Walsall and Swindon Town were unsuccessful, he performed an excellent job at Newport County on a tight budget and will have learned a lot.

If the Robins are able to complete a deal, he will have a significant transfer workload over the next few months.
