The Robins have been steadily losing ground in recent years; in just two years, they have gone from battling for promotion back into League One to threatening relegation into non-league.
Swindon had a terrible start to the 2024–25 season, winning just one of their first ten League games and falling to the bottom of the standings.
Due to their subpar performance, Mark Kennedy was removed of his responsibilities, and Ian Holloway, a legend in the EFL, took his place. There were questions raised about Holloway’s selection because the 61-year-old had not played football for four years and might not have been a good fit for a team that was on the verge of going non-league.
Although Holloway’s ability to turn things around is still uncertain, something has to occur quickly or the Robins will find themselves in a very precarious situation.
Over the summer, they did lose a few important players, such as a striker who rose to prominence at the County Ground before leaving for the Southern Premier League, which has obviously hurt them.
Charlie Austin was well known to the Robins when he signed with Swindon in December 2022. The striker became an immediate hit in attack after earning his first EFL minutes with Swindon during the 2009–10 campaign.
In his maiden EFL season, he scored an outstanding 19 goals in League Two. The next season, he scored 12 goals in 20 league starts. After making a reputation for himself at the County Ground, Austin continued playing football in the Premier League and Championship, scoring goals wherever he went.
Midway through the 2022–2023 season, the striker returned to Swindon Town as an experienced attacker, demonstrating his affection for the team.
Austin demonstrated that he still had his shooting boots during the course of the following year and a half, helping to contribute to 29 goals across all competitions.
He was one of their few bright spots as they finished 19th in League Two the previous season, and he donned the captain’s armband.
Austin’s stint in the EFL and at Swindon Town ended there, though they will undoubtedly continue to watch him in the non-league right now.
