Even though they played well in the first half, Swindon lost 4-2 at home against Stockport County on Saturday.
Dan Kemp gave Town the lead in the first half, but Will Collar’s penalty tied the score.
Just after the hour, Jake Young gave Swindon the lead again, and midway through the second half, goals from Kyle Wootton and Odin Bailey gave Stockport the lead.
Callum Camps scored a late goal for the opposition, and Town will try to recover the following Saturday.
Tyrese Shade and Liam Kinsella were replaced in Swindon’s starting lineup for the Tuesday night matchup against Colchester by Saidou Khan and Williams Kokolo, a recent addition.
The first ten minutes of play were very level until Murphy Mahoney, the keeper for Swindon, made a great save just after the tenth to deny Antoni Sarcevic of Stockport from close range.
Seven minutes later, midfielder George McEachran received a well-worked corner that presented Town’s greatest opportunity. McEachran fired first, but the Stockport defenders only managed to block his volley.
After two minutes, Swindon had another fantastic opportunity when a second set piece found its way to Tom Brewitt’s head. He flicked the ball agonisingly close to the Stockport crossbar.
Later in the first half, though, Swindon would take the lead when Dan Kemp, a midfield player, was put up 25 yards from goal by swift build-up play. Kemp was then able to glide forward and strike a powerful, deflected shot into the top-left corner.
Swindon held strong for the last few minutes of the first half, giving them a slim lead at the interval. Stockport replied for the final fifteen minutes of the half.
Swindon 1 Stockport 0 at halftime
Stockport applied early pressure as the second half got underway, and in the 53rd minute, midfielder Will Collar equalised from the penalty spot.
Despite this early setback, Town bounced back two minutes later and came dangerously close to taking the lead again when Jake Young broke free down the left side and shot from inside the Stockport penalty area. Hinchliffe saved the effort, and Williams Kokolo, making his debut, went inches wide of the far post with his touch.
Swindon did, however, get their second goal in the 61st minute via Young, who scored for the second time in as many games after the ball was moved down the left-hand side and fed to the striker, who powered a shot in at the near post to give Town the lead once again.
After Odin Bailey’s brilliant effort gave Stockport the lead four minutes after Kyle Wootton’s equalisation in the 69th minute, Swindon was left searching for an answer.
With less than ten minutes remaining, Kemp came dangerously close to scoring his second goal when he struck from just beyond the penalty area, missing the Stockport near post with his shot.
Late in the game, Stockport scored their fourth goal. Swindon attempted to equalise, but the visitors responded, and in the 88th minute, new addition Callum Camps scored from close range.
After another game that went to extra overtime, Town’s next move will be to go to Harrogate on Saturday in an attempt to make up for today’s setback.
