Teenager, arrested after motorbike smashes into car during police chase

A 17-year-old boy was arrested after the motorbike he was riding was smashed into a car during a police chase in Salford on Thursday (August 15).

Officers had attempted to stop the motorbike rider along Manchester Road, in Swinton, at around 7.30am. A short chase ensued before the bike ploughed into another car.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, cordoned off the road for a number of hours amid investigations. The rider, a 17-year-old boy, suffered injuries that are not life-threatening or life-changing.

He has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, disqualified driving and drug offences. The motorbike has been seized, with investigations into the crash ongoing.

The incident was referred to GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Both investigations into the conduct of the officers have since concluded and no further action will be taken, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.

Drone pictures from the scene show the main road taped off near to the junction with Billy Lane, with a number of police vehicles and officers at the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Our district Salford officers spotted a motorcycle that failed to stop along Manchester Road in Swinton at around 7:30am this morning (August 15).

“During a very short pursuit, the motorcycle collided with a member of the public’s car. The rider, a 17-year-old boy, suffered injuries which are not life-threatening or life-changing and was subsequently arrested. The motorcycle was seized at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

“In-line with normal procedure, referrals were made to GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct which have concluded their investigations into officer conduct, with no further action needed.”
