The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will play Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, February 11, in Las Vegas, following Sunday night’s NFC Championship game.
There was a throwback Texas vs. Texas A&M rivalry on the sidelines of the 49ers vs. Detroit Lions NFC game since both head coaches, Aggie Dan Campbell and former Longhorn Kyle Shanahan, have ties to the Lone Star State.
In the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers pulled off an incredible comeback to defeat the Lions 34–31 after trailing by 17 points at the half. With this victory, the team qualified for its ninth Super Bowl participation.
While playing for the Texas Longhorns in 2001 and 2002, Shanahan developed his receiving abilities with Major Applewhite and Chris Simms.
On the other hand, Campbell—who was renowned for his fierce leadership—made a contribution to the Aggies as a tight end, appearing in 48 games between 1995 and 1998.
Even though Shanahan guided a team to a Super Bowl, Campbell was a brilliant player who lost to Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020.
In the meantime, after 32 years without a postseason victory, Campbell’s tough coaching approach helped guide the Lions to a long playoff run. The team had finished just 12-21 in the two seasons before, but Campbell’s approach transformed them into a 12-5 NFC North champion.
Awarded the esteemed Aggie Heart Award, Campbell’s Texas A&M career featured 27 receptions for 314 yards and three touchdowns. His ability as a blocker ultimately resulted in the Giants selecting him in the third round of the 1999 NFL draft.
Throughout his playing career, Campbell was a member of the Giants, Cowboys, and Lions. He also spent time on injured reserve with the Saints in their season of winning the Super Bowl.
