Blue Jays pursuing trade for two-time All-Star infielder’

The Blue Jays of Toronto may be attempting to enter The Crone Zone.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported this week that the Jays had discussed a potential deal for infielder Jake Cronenworth with the San Diego Padres. Cronenworth, 29, is a buy-low candidate after hitting.229 with a.689 OPS previous season

San Diego has already dealt Juan Soto and Trent Grisham and allowed free agents Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo to leave. Even though they recently signed Japanese reliever Yuki Matsui to a $28 million contract, the Padres would still like to reduce their salary. Another big method to accomplish this would be to trade Cronenworth, who is poised to begin a new seven-year, $80 million contract.

Rosenthal did speculate that San Diego may be hesitant to part with another left-handed hitter after already dealing Soto and Grisham to the New York Yankees. But Toronto needs another bat like this (they’re already looking for another lefty slugger) and might make a very competitive offer for Cronenworth.
