Torquay United are drifting aimlessly and the fans have had enough*

LARGE READTorquay United was a proud member of the Football League for eight decades. They are now at their lowest point ever, due to a failing stadium plan and an owner with misplaced priorities.

Was this the lowest point, or is your club’s inability to stop plummeting just a moveable feast? Following four straight losses and 15 goals conceded, Torquay United headed to Braintree Town in the National League South last weekend. Even with a man sent off after 25 minutes and a 0-0 score, Braintree managed to win the match.

Following the match, Torquay manager Gary Johnson, 68, who has managed the team for the past five and a half years, claimed that none of his players had any positive results from the loss and blamed a few of them for not contributing for a while.

Johnson claimed, “They looked bereft of confidence,” which is, at the very least, difficult to dispute.

How could any Torquay United player be sure of anything? The expectation at the beginning of the season—their first back in the sixth tier—was a campaign of promotion. When they were here in 2018–19, they had won the division by a score of ten points.

They are now 11th in the standings, between Slough Town and Tonbridge Angels, and have not won in a month. Playoffs feel like an unattainable goal even for them. For the first time in their existence, Torquay will play football in the sixth division in consecutive seasons.
