A MAN who died in a stolen car which crashed into a lorry on a major road has been named by the coroner.
George Hughes, of Meyrick Close, Bransgore, died in the early hours of July 13.
At 3.16am, police officers rushed to the scene of the collision – involving a HGV lorry and a silver Peugeot 107 – on the A326, at the junction with Monkton Lane in Totton.
Mr Hughes, 51, died at the scene.
The road was closed in both directions between Fletchwood Road and A35 Hunters Hill for around 12 hours.
On Thursday, July the inquest was began in Winchester Coroners’ Court by the local coroner, Rosamund Rhodes-Kemp.
The official cause of death was listed as various injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
This follows an appeal by the police for crash witnesses.
They verified that on December 23, of last year, the Peugeot 107 was taken from Fordingbridge Car Park, Round Hill, Fordingbridge, and fitted with a duplicate licence plate.
Just before police arrived, it was also thought that another car had been at the scene of the collision.
On July 2 of next year, there will be a complete inquest investigating Mr. Hughes’s death.
