3 Tom Cannon alternatives Burnley FC consider as Sheffield United Sunderland win transfer battle

Burnley has joined promotion rivals Sheffield United and Sunderland in the fiercely contested trade race for Leicester City’s Tom Cannon.

The Republic of Ireland international, who has nine Championship goals from 22 games in the Potteries, was formally recalled by the Foxes from his loan stay with Stoke on Wednesday morning in anticipation of his impending departure.

Burnley has joined the race in the face of new competition from Everton, who just transferred Cannon to Leicester in the summer of 2023, according to a recent update from Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail.

The Blades and Sunderland, who are also vying for automatic promotion, will be competing with the Clarets for his signature. Both teams have expressed a strong desire to make the move, which could determine who moves to the Premier League in May.

According to sources, the two teams are willing to spend up to £13 million for the gifted striker, contingent on promotion. For the time being, an initial loan agreement is being discussed. As one might expect, Burnley would want to consider similar terms in exchange for promotion to the top division.

However, who may Scott Parker turn to if Burnley’s efforts to get Cannon fail? A look at Football League World…

Emmanuel Dennis

Three Championship clubs and one team from La Liga and Serie A, respectively, are interested in Nottingham Forest’s Emmanuel Dennis, who is available on loan and a permanent transfer after reaching the last 18 months of his contract at the City Ground. These teams are currently unnamed, as reported by Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The 27-year-old’s only competitive appearance occurred on April 27 when playing for Watford in a 1-0 victory over Sunderland. He has been banished to the East Midlands this season and was not included in Forest’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Dennis scored four goals in 18 games during his brief return to Watford, but his most notable stint at Vicarage Road is his initial stint there, which would help any prospective acquisition.

After returning 10 goals and six assists for Watford in the 2021–2022 Premier League season, Dennis earned his transfer to Forest. If properly unlocked, that kind of talent may significantly impact the Championship promotion fight.

Dennis’ mobility, adaptability, and ball-carrying skills could provide another dimension to Burnley’s erratic assault, which has had trouble breaking through low-block Championship defences this season. He can play as a striker or on the left flank.

Although his ability to see well has considerably diminished over the past few years, he still has a keen eye for goal.

Dennis should be in his peak at 27, though, so it might not be time to write him off just yet. Given his availability, if Parker’s team loses the race for Cannon, he’s a feasible and possibly astute choice to take into account.

Deivid Washington

Deivid Washington, a Premier League striker who should definitely be looking to leave Chelsea on loan this month after not getting a look-in under Enzo Maresca, is another player worth considering as a possible Cannon substitute.

Eighteen months ago, Washington reportedly paid £17.1 million to join Chelsea from Santos, a Brazilian team. He signed a seven-year contract, although he has only made three appearances for the Blues, all of which came last season.

Last summer, the gifted striker was on the verge of completing a £17.6 million deal to Strasbourg, but it apparently fell through because of worries because Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, also owned the French team.
