Antonio Portales reveals Dundee contract talks and message to fans

The Mexican is attempting to prolong his stay at Dens, but his current contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

Antonio Portales has disclosed that he is negotiating a longer stay in Dundee.

Ahead of their match against Hibs at home, the Mexican defender has given the Dark Blues a boost by sharing that information. Tony Docherty wants to extend the 28-year-old’s contract, which expires in the summer. He was signed from Atlante last year. “My contract is up next year, 2025,” Portales affirmed. We are now discussing an extension with the club. Yeah, hopefully we will do it.”

One of the main players in Docherty’s team that helped Dundee finish in the top six the previous season was Portales. They are eager to bounce back to winning ways against Hibs in order to make up for their loss to Aberdeen prior to the international break, which dropped them out of the top half this time. The Dundee star asserted, “We know if we win again we are likely to be in the top six.” However, because the opposing clubs are so close, it will be more difficult if we lose or tie. We’re concentrating on our work.

‘I think the team doesn’t look at the table because it’s not good. We are just focusing on our job to play better for the team.”

Dundee’s main issues this season has been losing too many goals and making too many individual mistakes. Docherty was critical of his team after their defeat at Aberdeen and keeping the back door shut is something they have been working on over the ibreak.

Portales said:“If you have a mistake in the defence, the other team is likely to score a goal. I think it’s not the defence, it’s all the team. If the team wins, all the team wins. “If the team loses, all the team loses. It’s a team.

“The first defender is the striker, midfield and then the back line. Of course, I think everyone is working in their job to play better for the team to be in the best version of all Dundee.

“If we work on ourselves, we will help the team. “I think the team right now understands that and we will have a very good chance on Saturday to play better. No mistakes, just play, play and play.”

Hibs find themselves bottom of the table. Portales knows they are still a good side and won’t be taking anything for granted. He thinks the fact Hibs and Hearts are 11th and 12th shows the strength of the Scottish Premiership “I think they are a very good team but I think the league right now is very strong,” the former Monterrey player.

“Celtic is a rival of Aberdeen, and other nearby teams also win games, but that’s football.” It benefits the league, in my opinion.
Because it’s a great competition for everyone, it benefits all of the league’s players.

Despite starting most of the games, Portales was benched against Aberdeen and St Johnstone. He has not been accustomed to it. He admitted, “I don’t like it.” Being on the bench is unpleasant for any player, but that’s just the nature of football. The team is the most crucial element. The team is the most essential thing to me, regardless of whether I play in the starting lineup or on the bench.

“I encourage my teammates because, in the XI,they support me. It’s a team, it’s a family.”
