Baker Mayfield explains why he after mocking him

During the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ decisive 30-7 victory over the New York Giants, Baker Mayfield talked candidly about his choice to imitate Tommy DeVito’s celebration. Mayfield rushed into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown as the second quarter was coming to a close.

The Giants’ defence put up a fierce fight, but Mayfield jumped above the players and scored despite the ball slipping out of his hands as it hit the ground. Mayfield enthusiastically flung his hands up and down with pinched fingers in celebration of the touchdown, which stood.

“It’s not a disrespectful thing,” Mayfield explained in his interview with CBS after the tournament. “I met Tommy last year during the Super Bowl in Vegas, and he’s really cool. This is a small tribute to him because the fans adore him here.”

Later, when speaking to the media, Mayfield acknowledged that he had no malice in his heart and that he had adopted DeVito’s celebration on a whim.

The 29-year-old said, “[It was] a tribute to Tommy,” after the game. “He’s a good dude – He’s got swag.”

Mayfield acknowledged that the celebration simply happened when questioned if he had any awareness about it, saying, “Oh, I have no idea.” I simply watch him do it. The majority of the time, I’m not sure what I’m

going to do so because of unforeseen circumstances. Yes, Tommy is adored by New York fans here, and they provide them with something they enjoy.

In a relaxed manner, DeVito told reporters after the game, “Honestly, I really didn’t know until someone just mentioned it in the locker room,” in reference to Mayfield’s imitation of his celebration.

“I mean, they were having a good game, they celebrated. It is what it is. Kinda happened last year, I mean it’s going to happen I guess.”

DeVito also talked about the heavy hit during the game’s opening quarter. After avoiding a first sack by Christian Izien, he was unable to avoid Calijah Kancey, who delivered a powerful blow that sent him falling onto the field, earning the nickname “toughest sack of the season” from many onlookers.

“First time being out there in a while, playing real football again since preseason so probably going to take some time to get adjusted a little bit to getting hit again but I’ll be OK,” DeVito said, indicating that the bone-crunching tackle didn’t really bother him given his recent return to action.

Mayfield finished with 294 yards and one rushing touchdown on 24 of 30 pass attempts. Alternatively, DeVito finished 21 out of 31 passes for 189 yards but failed to score any touchdowns.
