During the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ decisive 30-7 victory over the New York Giants, Baker Mayfield talked candidly about his choice to imitate Tommy DeVito’s celebration. Mayfield rushed into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown as the second quarter was coming to a close.
The Giants’ defence put up a fierce fight, but Mayfield jumped above the players and scored despite the ball slipping out of his hands as it hit the ground. Mayfield enthusiastically flung his hands up and down with pinched fingers in celebration of the touchdown, which stood.
“It’s not a disrespectful thing,” Mayfield explained in his interview with CBS after the tournament. “I met Tommy last year during the Super Bowl in Vegas, and he’s really cool. This is a small tribute to him because the fans adore him here.”
Later, when speaking to the media, Mayfield acknowledged that he had no malice in his heart and that he had adopted DeVito’s celebration on a whim.
The 29-year-old said, “[It was] a tribute to Tommy,” after the game. “He’s a good dude – He’s got swag.”
Mayfield acknowledged that the celebration simply happened when questioned if he had any awareness about it, saying, “Oh, I have no idea.” I simply watch him do it. The majority of the time, I’m not sure what I’m
going to do so because of unforeseen circumstances. Yes, Tommy is adored by New York fans here, and they provide them with something they enjoy.
In a relaxed manner, DeVito told reporters after the game, “Honestly, I really didn’t know until someone just mentioned it in the locker room,” in reference to Mayfield’s imitation of his celebration.
“I mean, they were having a good game, they celebrated. It is what it is. Kinda happened last year, I mean it’s going to happen I guess.”
