Harry Darling, a defender for Swansea City, is reportedly a target for Sheffield United.
The Blades are reportedly considering a bid for the 25-year-old, whose contract with the Welsh team expires in the summer, according to the most recent report from the Sheffield Star.
The tall defender, who is now serving a suspension after receiving a red card in the Swans’ 2-1 loss to United last week, is reportedly admired by Bristol City as well.
Following Harry Souttar’s season-ending injury last month—the Leicester City loanee will miss a year due to an Achilles rupture against Burnley on Boxing Day—Chris Wilder will be looking to bolster his defensive options.
Sheffield United plot Harry Darling swoop
The red half of Steel City will be thrilled by the Star’s Tuesday morning revelation, as a deal for Darling is being contemplated before to the February 3 transfer deadline.
Since joining Swansea from MK Dons in the summer of 2022, the centre-back has received overwhelmingly positive evaluations, with his confidence both in and out of possession standing out.
Before going red last Tuesday, Darling had started every Championship game for Luke Williams’ team. However, since his current contract is coming to an end, City may be eager to cash in during the current transfer window or risk him departing on a free transfer in July.
It was Darren Witcoop who broke news of Bristol City’s interest in Darling earlier in the transfer window, while also stating that League One big-spenders Birmingham City were also keen.
No bids have been reported as yet for the defender, but with his contract status as it is, it is hard to see a world where he remains at Swansea past the transfer deadline next week.
Sheffield United need Harry Souttar replacement
Souttar had been a major part of the Blades’ defensive unit before his injury around the festive period, and will have left Wilder considering his options in the January transfer window.
The Blades could use another strong presence in the squad for the rest of the season, even though Anel Ahmedhodzic and Jack Robinson have been playing brilliantly in the middle of the backline lately. Jamal Baptiste is also available to provide backup if needed.
Prior to Souttar’s injury, United had only given up eight goals between mid-October and Boxing Day. However, with Friday night’s 3-0 loss to Hull City at home, they have now given up eight goals in their last six league games and lost 1-0 to Cardiff City in the FA Cup.
Given that United wants to return to the top tier right away in the second half of the season, a player with Darling’s size and skill could be the ideal addition to the Steel City team to help relieve those defensive concerns.
