Bristol Rovers hit brutal double transfer at deadline

With striker Kion Etete expected to seal a loan deal with League One rivals Bolton Wanderers and 19-year-old forward Michael Reindorf nearing a temporary move to Notts County, Bristol Rovers appear to have lost out on two potential loan recruits from Cardiff City.

The Trotters will sign 23-year-old Etete until the end of the season, surpassing Charlton Athletic and the Gas in the process, according to a social media report by journalist Darren Witcoop. Meanwhile, Sky Sports reports that young Reindorf, who was linked to a move to the Memorial Stadium, will instead be joining League Two promotion contenders Notts County. As Rovers attempt to avoid relegation, new manager Inigo Calderon will need to find reinforcements elsewhere to League Two.

After a protracted fight with his fitness due to a hamstring injury, Etete, who was formerly a Tottenham Hotspur youth prospect, joined Cardiff in 2022 and scored six goals in 56 games for the Bluebirds. However, he has yet to make a professional appearance this season. Reindorf has only made two senior appearances for Cardiff, having started his youth career at West Ham.

The moves have yet to be confirmed but it appears that Bristol Rovers will have to find other targets as they try to bolster a front line which has struggled for goal, especially away from home – the Gas have managed just two goals in their last eight matches on the road.

The situation is worsened by a long-term injury to Promise Omochere, who tore his hamstring on New Year’s Day and isn’t expected to be back in action until April. The loan market is likely to be Rovers’ best bet of finding a replacement, with spending money believed to be thin on the ground following a summer overhaul.
