Burnley mourn passing out of legend

Burnley has honoured Ian Britton, its former striker who passed away at the age of 61 following a protracted illness.

The Clarets’ supporters hold Britton in high regard because of his goal against Leyton Orient in May 1987, which kept Burnley in the league.

Burnley’s players will play this week against Brighton at the top of the table wearing black armbands in remembrance of him.

“We learned of Ian’s death yesterday with great sadness,” stated Barry Kilby, vice chairman of Burnley.

“He will always be associated with the goal he scored in the renowned Orient match in 1987, which kept the team alive.”

“He had been battling prostate cancer for a while, displaying the same tenacity and determination on the football pitch.

We send our deepest sympathies to Ian’s family and friends, and we feel that the world is a less place now that he is gone.

“Everyone at Burnley Football Club was saddened to learn the news yesterday,” said Sean Dyche, manager of Burnley.

“Ian will always be remembered for the goal he scored here in May 1987, which cemented his legendary position at Turf Moor.

“So many people, in many ways, owe Ian a debt of gratitude; without that goal, who knows what might have happened and I might never have had the chance to manage this club.”
