Carlisle boss gives verdict on Reading FC’s points deduction”

Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson has claimed that the EFL should have been ‘harsher’ regarding Reading FC’s latest points punishment.

Prior to his team’s game against the Royals this Saturday at Brunton Park, Simpson was addressing the media.

The team now in 24th place in League One, Reading, won the rematch 5-1 at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Reading will be seeking retribution in an attempt to salvage some chance for survival.

Reading is now only three points above the drop zone going into the weekend, having dropped to 20th place following their most recent two-point punishment and two-point suspension.

Simpson added, “We know it’s not the coaching staff’s or the players’ or staff’s fault that they keep getting points deducted.”

However, there appears to be a problem at the local football team. It continues to occur.

To be quite honest with you, I too believe that something is wrong and that the Football League should be doing more about it.

All of us would prefer to spend more money than we have or have done because we know that we won’t suffer too much punishment. However, we don’t as that isn’t the appropriate course of action.

Simpson clarified that he thought the EFL ought to have imposed more severe punishment on Reading.

“I can’t really concern myself with what the right sanctions are,” he said. I just believe that a gentle, gentle approach isn’t really appropriate if there are repeat offenders.

“I believe that more severe punishment is necessary. I have no business making those choices.

“Once more, let me express my sympathies to the players, staff, and supporters as they are not the ones who are to blame.

It’s an odd circumstance. Simply put, I believe that teams who are spending more money than they can afford should face harsh penalties from the EFL, as it creates an unfair playing field.
