Dundee United target eyes swoop deal St Johnstone legend move’

Wotherspoon will be a free agent in January.

Dundee United have made Inverness Caledonian Thistle midfielder David Wotherspoon one of their top transfer targets as the Tangerines bid to boost their Championship title charge.

The St Johnstone legend has been in sparkling form since penning a short-term contract with the Caley Jags in October, notching five goals and one assist from 11 outings.

The 33-year-old’s exploits in the Highlands – starring under ex-Tannadice hero Duncan Ferguson – followed a stint training with Dunfermline Athletic during the summer.

Wotherspoon’s contract is set to expire in mid-January, and according to Courier Sport, United is eager to have the Canada international return to Tayside and is leading the race for his services.

Wotherspoon would suit the bill in terms of availability and pedigree for manager Jim Goodwin’s active efforts to expand the team’s options in the final third, even though there will be competition for his signature.

His versatility, which allows him to play in wide areas or behind a main striker, would also be very beneficial to the Tangerines

United have “identified one or two”

In response to questions last week about United’s plans for January, Goodwin said, “As with any manager, you are always trying to add quality and improve the group.” Goodwin has previously confirmed that United will have flexibility in the coming month.

“Luigi Capuano, CEO, and I have the task of locating the best players at the most competitive price. It’s up to us to move those that we believe we’ve identified as viable targets over the finish line.

After a legendary ten years with the Saintees, former Hibernian kid Wotherspoon left McDiarmid Park last summer, with former boss Steven MacLean choosing not to present a new contract.

The star, who was born in Bridge of Earn, is arguably the greatest player to have ever played for St Johnstone. He has won the Scottish Cup twice (in 2014 and 2021) and the League Cup (2021) with his hometown team.

He reached yet another professional high when he played for Canada in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, coming on as a 76th-minute substitute in their last group match against Morocco.
