I thought it was a really good game for the neutral, but we gave them three goals today. The first and second goals were bad, and even the third goal was a great strike, but we had the warning first half because he (George Abbott) did it then too. The fourth goal looked offside, but it was more bad, lazy defending from us. You see, we gave them the points today, but that doesn’t take anything away from them because they play some really good football. I’m just disappointed with how we defended today.
With your speedy return, was the fourth goal the most crucial?
Today was filled with several dubious judgements. Although I don’t frequently visit referees, I’m going to do so today. It was a little frustrating because there was a change and neither he nor we were informed. However, I am not being fined. For placing my water bottle in the dugout, I received a booking. I just tossed it in, not out of rage. It was really annoying.
Can you find the good in the fact that you scored three goals once more?
Of course you can. Even with the bad goals we gave them, we had a great second half. They are a strong team and don’t require assistance. You expect to win the game when you score three points at home.
Does it essentially sum up the season’s first 23 games, where the team is excellent at scoring goals but perhaps not as effective at stopping them?
Indeed, we need to strengthen our defence. The only team that I believe has scored more goals than us, maybe one or two others, is Walsall, Notts County. We have scored a lot of goals. The fact that we are on -2 tells you something.
What must occur in order to tighten
defensively?
Eliminate the particular mistakes; that would be beneficial. We had a completely valid goal that would have put us ahead 2-0, but it was disallowed for whatever reason. I’ll go ask the referee that question as well.
You have to give him a bit of time now, is that right?
Half an hour, yes. You never get a straight answer, so I am probably wasting my time a little bit. But it will probably help me sleep better tonight, knowing that I did do it.
What other decisions are you going to ask him?
You are trying to get me in trouble, but I am not going to say anymore. He’ll know in there when I go and see him. We’ll go from there.
Your substitutes certainly made an impact didn’t they?
Ryan Bowman went on and scored straight away and I thought Tom Pett and Lewis Payne were both really good. Matty taylor didn’t have much time, we just wanted to throw the dice so to speak. I’d rather lose 5-3 going for it, than 4-3 not going for it. That’s the mentality. Second half, we were the better team, but we have lost the game.
But in the big picture, it’s still a terrific run
An unbelievable run. Quality. I guarantee any supporter, Notts County and Cheltenham, enjoyed that game. When they look back on. Notts County fans a little bit more than us obviously because they got the three points, but it was a really entertaining game and if I paid for a ticket today, I’d be saying “do you know what, I’d come back”.
