WXYZ (Garden City, Mich.) — Due to development, Merriman Road, which runs along the boundary between Garden City and Westland, has been closed for nearly two years.
People who live and work in the region tell me they are frustrated with the length of time it is taking to finish the project.
“Let’s finish it,” remarked HandyMart manager Jeff Kassab.
The HandyMart convenience shop on Merriman Road is operated by Jeff Kassab.
He claims that since the road’s construction began in January 2023, both the volume of traffic in the region and the number of people visiting his store have decreased.
Kassab stated, “Thank God for my loyal customers. I love you, Garden City and Westland, but you know, we don’t see new faces anymore.”
Kassab claims that in order to keep the store solvent, he has had to make some difficult choices.
“We reduced payroll, I had to fire staff, and I worked a few extra hours myself,” Kassab remarked.
Two bridges will be replaced as part of the Merriman construction project: one over Hines Drive and the other over the Rouge River.
Initially, the project was supposed to be finished by the autumn of 2023, but things didn’t work out that way.
Garden City resident Nan Fyre remarked, “It’s been a pain in the rear.”
According to Nan Frye, the construction has caused her financial difficulties.
Gas-wise, it was more expensive for me because I had to circle back on Merriman after going down to either Middlebelt Road,” Frye said.
According to Frye and Kassab, they are curious about the reason behind the hold-up and the anticipated completion date of the building.
I brought their enquiries to Wayne County officials, who were unable to appear on television but provided me with these responses.
Regarding the reason behind the delays, I’ve been informed that
The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2024, depending on the quality of the weather. We will keep checking in with officials to see how the project is progressing as construction goes on.
