George Hall of Birmingham City has contributed three goals in his previous five Walsall games.
After a year of suffering injuries at Birmingham City, George Hall is beginning to trust his body once more, and Walsall is benefiting from this.
As the League Two promotion contenders overcame Shrewsbury Town 3-0 in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday, the gifted 20-year-old got his first appearance in two months. With their victory, Walsall topped the Blues’ group.
Hall, who has just recorded two assists, scored his first goal in eighteen months against Shrewsbury. On the day his hamstring issues began, in April 2023, Hall scored his final goal against Sunderland.
Last season, every time Hall seemed to be getting close to making a comeback for the Blues, he would relapse. Consequently, Hall only played 133 minutes and made eight appearances as a substitute in the Championship during 2023–2024.
“I’ve been inconsistent with my game time and there have been a lot of ups and downs,” Hall told BBC WM. It has been really challenging, but I’ve had supportive people by my side to keep me motivated and level-headed. I’m hoping to move on and keep doing what I’m doing since I knew that someday I would get over it.
It’s challenging because you observe people your age persevering, avoiding injuries, and receiving rewards. It’s difficult to watch from the sidelines, especially when you see your team lose or even win; you can’t help but feel involved. I’m glad to have moved past that and be able to carry on with my previous activities.
On his brief appearances with the Blues Hall seemed to be playing inside himself last term, most likely out of a concern of overstretching. Hall is now comfortable opening up and using his speed.
Hall continued, “It’s good to have that confidence in my body and myself, not having to hold back and worry about getting hurt and pulling up.” Regaining my body’s confidence has been the most significant thing for me in recent months. Technically, I knew I would be fine on the ball, but it’s about letting go and having faith in my ability to sprint up and down like I used to.
Hall has found someone who is committed to helping him restart his career in Mat Sadler, the manager of Walsall and a former Blues defender. Although there is still two thirds of the season left, Hall has contributed slightly to Walsall’s ascent to second place in League Two thus far Hall praised Sadler, saying, “He’s been great.” He eased me in since he understands how difficult it has been for me. I simply appreciate the chance he has given me.
