Huddersfield confirm departure as fee agreed after ‘incredibly honest’ conversation on future

Michal Helik, a defender for Huddersfield Town, has joined Oxford United for an unknown sum. After two and a half years with the Terriers, the centre-back leaves the team after making 100 appearances and scoring 13 goals in all competitions.

The 29-year-old has joined a team that was promoted from League One last season and currently sits 17th in the Championship standings.

Town’s sporting director Mark Cartwright stated on the club’s website, “As a club, we had an incredibly honest conversation with Michal and his representatives in the summer following relegation from the Championship, and we’ve maintained a good working relationship with all concerned throughout.”

“We were adamant that no such transfer would be approved at the time, and the only inquiry we got about Michal came from a team we thought would be a direct adversary in League One. We did, however, agree with Michal that we would not obstruct him again if a team in a higher tier made an offer that was acceptable to both the player and the agency.

“We have accepted an offer that we feel is best for the club, especially considering Michal’s present contractual condition. We appreciate Michal’s decision to accept this challenge. We are not being pushed to make this move or make it for financial reasons, but we are keeping our promise to Michal because we believe that everyone will gain from the agreement.

“He departs with his head held high and with our collective best wishes for the future, having given his all for Huddersfield Town in his time here.”

“Michal has been an excellent professional to deal with since I joined the club,” said head coach Michael Duff. He has put in a lot of effort since then, understanding and respecting our choice to keep him on board for the summer.

Michal has chosen to take on a new challenge, and we have received an offer that benefits both of us and is in everyone’s best interests, even though his personal goals to return to the Championship align with ours as a club.

It’s only natural for other parties to show interest in your players when you’re performing well. Although Michal has been a valuable member of the team during his tenure, we are certain that we already have enough depth in that position within the squad to keep making development in the same manner.
