Due to yet another injury, Aaron Connolly’s Ireland comeback may be postponed one again. He plays strike for Hull City.
He was included in Hull’s matchday squad for their Championship league loss to West Brom over the weekend, but a flare-up in his foot injury prevented him from playing off the bench.
Liam Rosenior, the manager of City, told Hull Live, “I wanted to change it and get Aaron Connolly on the pitch because I thought the space was there, but when he was warming up in the first half, his toe completely swelled up.”
“We attempted to warm it up and numb it. Throughout the game, he was available and suddenly he wasn’t. Since it occurred during the game, I’m not sure how serious it is; we’ll have to find out. It is indeed a regrettable one. It aggravates me since I knew there were holes. It was a major miss for Aaron because we went wide, which left West Brom’s back four wide open. I thought Aaron could take advantage of that space later in the game.
Connolly has only appeared in one of the last 23 senior international games—the Euro 2024 loss to France in Paris—due to injuries and lack of form. He was included in the roster for the Greece vs. Gibraltar doubleheader last month, but an injury forced him to miss the game.
Troy Parrott is putting in a call-up, and Stephen Kenny will announce his team on Thursday for the home friendly against New Zealand and the away qualification against the Netherlands. Due to a lack of playing time, he was left off the roster for the October window, but he has since started the last two games for Dutch team Excelsior.
