Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as John McGinn reacts to the dramatic win over Zrinjski Mostar in the Europa Conference League
John McGinn claims Aston Villa’s patience in possession was key to their win over Zrinjski Mostar at Villa Park.
The Villa skipper scored the only goal of the game in the 94th minute as Villa got off the mark in Europa Conference League Group E with a much-needed victory. After losing 3-2 at Legia Warsaw two weeks ago, McGinn admitted that beating Zrinjski was crucial.
“It’s huge because of how we started the group,” he told TNT Sports. “Tonight was a must win. We didn’t play well in the first half.”
Unai Emery made six changes to the starting side who thrashed Brighton 6-1 at Villa Park last weekend. In came Jhon Duran, Leander Dendoncker, Youri Tielemans, Diego Carlos, Clement Lenglet and Leon Bailey.
But after a poor first half, Emery turned to Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz and Matty Cash to change the game. Cash combined with McGinn in the final stages of the second period by putting his cross on a plate for the midfielder to score in front of the Holte End.
