Major road closure after ghastly crash kill three in Worksop

Due to a collision between a lorry and a van this afternoon, drivers on the A1 in Nottinghamshire are experiencing significant delays. Following the accident this afternoon, the A1 Blyth Road is closed in both directions between the A57 (Upper Morton) and the A620 (Ranby), close to Worksop.

Nottingham County Drivers are asked to take an alternate route, and there are police officers present. Drivers are advised by National Highways to heed road signs’ solid circle diversion symbol.

According to Inrix, “A lorry and a van were involved in an accident that caused long delays on A1 Blyth Road in both directions between the Upper Morton (A57 Worksop turn off) and the Retford / Ranby Turn Off, Ranby.” congestion for northbound traffic up to just after the Elkesley turn off.”

Lane closure update

In an update, National Highways has stated that one lane is still closed for “recovery and clear-up,” even though the A1 has reopened northbound.

According to them, regular traffic conditions won’t return until at least shortly before midnight on Monday.

Air ambulance ‘at scene’

Eyewitnesses report that the air ambulance has been present at the scene.

Since then, the accident and the road have been cleared.

According to the National Highways: “A collision has resulted in lane closures on the #M1 southbound between J30 #Sheffield and J29a #MarkhamVale. There are tailbacks spanning roughly five miles and an hour as a result of this.”

A statement has also been released by the Nottinghamshire Police, who are present. They reported: “We are currently at the scene of a serious collision between a lorry and a van on the A1 at approximately 4:30 p.m.

“Emergency personnel are on the scene of the collision that occurred this afternoon (July 29) at 3 p.m. There are currently road closures heading towards Ranby from both the north and the south, and they should last the entire rush hour.

“While we look into this incident, we kindly ask drivers to stay away from the area and find other routes. We kindly request that anyone with information contact 101 and reference incident number 422 of July 29, 2024.”

National Highways has confirmed that the southbound A1 has now reopened.

A1 southbound reopens

According to Inrix, the A1 southbound has reopened at 4:40 p.m. “A lorry and a van involved in an accident between the A57 Worksop turn off (Upper Morton) and the A620 Retford Road (Retford / Ranby Turn Off, Ranby) has caused long delays on A1 Blyth Road Northbound.”

Traffic jams at the Elkesley turnoff. Additionally closed earlier, the southbound side is now open.

“The A638 and the A620 around Ranby are also heavily congested as traffic diverts from the closure.”

Southbound diversion

Road users travelling south are advised by the National Highways to heed the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs:

Turn right onto the A620 towards Retford at the A620 junction at Ranby, leaving the A1 southbound.
To stay on the A620, take the third exit at the Hallcroft Roundabout after travelling on the A620 towards Retford.
Proceed to the A638’s signalised intersection and make a right turn there.
To reach the A1 Markham Moor interchange, take the A638 through Eaton and Gamston. To continue travelling, take the second exit at the roundabout to re-join the A1 southbound.

Northbound diversion

Travellers heading north are advised by the National Highways to heed the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs.

At Apleyhead Interchange, get off the A1 and head west on the A57 towards Worksop.
Proceed over the roundabout by turning left (west) onto the Worksop Bypass at the A57/B6040 Manton Roundabout.
Proceed straight over the A57/A60/B6024 Mansfield Road/Newcastle Avenue Roundabout, A57/A60 Sandy Lane Roundabout, and Shireoaks Roundabout as you continue west on the Bypass.

Turn left (northwest) at the A57/B6041 Gateford Roundabout and follow the A57 for about 13 km to the A57/M1 J31 Interchange, passing through the signalised intersections at South Anston and Todwick.
Consider the M1 N/B.
Take the M18 northeast at the M1 Junction 32.
J2/A1(M) J35, M18. Join northbound A1(M).
