A body was discovered in Sandwich this morning (June 12) and the man, who was in his 50s, has been officially declared dead. The event happened close to a stream, and a route that was less than ten minutes’ walk from the River Stour was stopped as a sizable emergency service presence arrived to the scene.
In addition to the fire and police departments, it is thought that forensic experts were present at the scene. According to Kent Police’s initial statement, they were summoned to Woodnesborough Road at 9 a.m. due to a “concern for a man.”
Along with partner agencies, officers have been at the scene for a while. “Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service, and a man in his 50s was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a force spokeswoman stated in an update.
“A report for the coroner will be prepared, and the death is not being investigated further at this time.” After helping the police, according to Kent Fire and Rescue Service, they left the area just after 11 a.m.
Between The Butts and The Ropewalk walkways, which are close to Sandwich’s skate park and the cricket club green, Woodnesborough Road was reportedly closed. Photographs taken along the side of the road showed at least two police cars, a fire engine, and a fire response vehicle.
Witnesses at a local business reported they were not allowed to walk along the pavement and were unable to cross the stream to the other side. They said little information had been given about the circumstances of the incident.
