Report: Duke football quarterback key player to miss ‘extended period of time’ with toe injury

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that quarterback Riley Leonard will miss the team’s game against Wake Forest on Thursday night due to a “extended period of time” of injury. The Chronicle asked for a statement from the programme, but it didn’t get back right away.

The junior’s toe injury is not the same as the high ankle sprain he first sustained during the last offensive play of Duke’s game against Notre Dame on September 30, which prevented him from playing in the team’s subsequent game against N.C. State due to a bye week. Despite being declared ‘day-to-day’ in the week prior to the game, Leonard returned to the field on October 21 against Florida State, although he hobbled off the field after being tackled in the third quarter. While playing last Saturday against Louisville, Leonard only managed to complete 39.1% of his passes and only gained 13 yards on the ground.

Head coach Mike Elko stated that Leonard’s status was “day-to-day” and that he would be a “gametime decision” for Thursday’s game against the Demon Deacons at his weekly news conference on Tuesday morning.

If Leonard decides to declare, many believe he will be selected in the spring NFL Draught.

This is a work in progress and will be updated with new details as they become available.
