“RIP” wrexham legend.

Wrexham AFC are saddened to learn of the passing of former player David Powell, at the age of 79.

Powell, a Dolgarrog native, made 154 appearances for the Club and competed internationally for Wales from 1968 to 1972.

In 1962, Wrexham hired him as an apprentice, and he served as ground staff there.

After completing his apprenticeship, he was hired by the Club for his first professional contract.

Powell went on to have a fruitful career spanning more than a decade, but an injury eventually forced him to retire.

A talented full-back who could play on either side, he was a part of the 1965 Wrexham side that came second place in the Welsh Cup.

His first full international cap came in May 1968, when he made his debut in a 1-1 against West Germany at Ninian Park.

He received 11 caps during his time playing for his country, scoring once in a 3-1 loss to East Germany in October 1969.

He earned a significant move to Sheffield United in September 1968 following a fruitful stint with the Red Dragons, and he rapidly established himself as a key member of the Blades’ squad.

Due to his outstanding play, he was called up for additional Wales matches. In 1969, he was also named Sheffield United’s Player of the Year.

Powell kept up his good work at Bramall Lane, where he played a major role in Sheffield United’s 1970–71 promotion to the First Division following their Second Division runners-up finish.

When the full-back signed a free transfer to Cardiff City in September 1972, he made his way back to Wales.

Before quitting football in 1974, he played more than 30 games for the Bluebirds and was a member of City’s Welsh Cup-winning team in 1973.

Powell would relocate to South Wales after quitting football, and he would stay in the Cardiff region when he retired from the South Wales Police.

At this difficult time, David’s family and friends are in everyone at Wrexham AFC’s thoughts.
