Scott aims for January striker boost as Ayr United draw blank against Morton

In an attempt to increase his firepower, the United manager says he will enter the market.

In order to help Ayr stay competitive in the Championship title battle, Scott Brown says he will go to the January sales.

Despite playing well against Morton this afternoon, United was unable to advance to second place in the standings after drawing a blank.

If Ayr had won, they would have passed Livingston and come within five points of Falkirk at the top. However, on a disappointing day at Somerset, a number of lost opportunities came back to haunt them.

“The disappointment is that we had 15 shots on goal, but only three of them were on target,” Brown stated. The only team that appeared to have a chance to score was us, and we were by far the superior one.

“After the victories over Falkirk and Livingston, we would have had a great couple of weeks, but these things do happen. We must now get back up and try again, which requires a goal.

“We must improve in the latter third if we want to do it. We shut them out defensively and looked pretty strong once more, which was nice, but you just want to see guys step up and take charge in front of the goal.”

“We’ll definitely try and sign a striker in January,” Brown continued. It seems obvious to me that’s what has been lacking. We need someone to step in and assist in scoring goals because Anton (Dowds) has been sidelined due to injury.

Brown also disclosed that after receiving a yellow card from rookie referee Duncan Nicholson, he felt compelled to hook full back Nick McAllister at halftime.

The manager stated: “The referee made the call for us; by slinging yellow cards around, he somewhat lost the game. He was following all the rules because it was his third game in the Championship and his advisor was monitoring him from the stands. That’s where referees occasionally need to unwind a little.”

Ayr should have taken the lead in the first two minutes, but Connor McLennan fired over from close range. Brown had remained with the same team that had triumphed at Livingston the previous week.

Before the game revolved around Nicholson’s whistle for the remainder of the first half, Morton reacted, and Filip Stuparevic should have done better than shot straight at Harry Stone from 12 yards out.

Following a barrage of yellow cards he handed out, including one to McAllister, Brown substituted Mark McKenzie for his full back at halftime.

After the interval, however, it was all Ayr, and they lost several good opportunities to win the points.

Before McLennan hammered a spectacular chance over the top from 12 yards out, Scott McMann headed barely over from a Jay Henderson corner.

Morton held on for a point, but Henderson squandered another fantastic opportunity at the backpost after latching on to a McMann cross. Marco Rus then headed straight at Ryan Mullen at the end.

Dougie Imrie, the visiting manager, stated: “Playing Ayr is always difficult because they have a strong team with talented players everywhere on the pitch. In the second half, we played excellent defence.
