Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic prodigy makes second move of Fleetwood Town confirm

Less than three months after joining Fleetwood Town, Liam Shaw, a former Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic star, has left the team.
When Celtic signed the midfield player in 2021, he was considered one of Wednesday’s most promising prospects.

It did not work out for Shaw north of the border and after loan spells with Motherwell, Morecambe and Wigan Athletic, he became a free agent.

He rejoined League Two team Fleetwood in October to secure his comeback to the game, but he has since re-ascended to the third division.

Shaw has been captured by Northampton, who have paid an undisclosed sum to activate the 23-year-old’s release clause. He agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Shaw will now report to Kevin Nolan, a former midfielder in the Premier League who recently took over as Cobblers manager.

“Liam was one of our top targets, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the club,” Nolan stated. He was already on the recruitment team’s radar, which matched my opinion because I’ve always thought highly of him as a player.

“He is someone who I think can come in and make us better. He is a box-to-box midfielder, he likes to get involved and he is good on the ball too.

“He has all the qualities you look for in a good central midfielder and on top of that he comes with a good pedigree and is a good age.

“I would like to thank the board of directors and everyone involved for allowing us to move quickly to get this deal done, and I am really pleased to welcome Liam to the club.”

A product of Wednesday’s academy, Shaw made 24 appearances for the Owls at first-team level and scored once.
