A Sheffield United move for Holgate may have fallen through – but they could still take him to Bramall Lane this month.
Holgate’s playing time has been restricted at St. Mary’s this season due to the strong central defender tandem of Jan Bednarek and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
The fact that Kyle Walker-Peters and Ryan Manning are also viable options and frequently play fullback has resulted in Holgate spending the majority of the season on the bench.
The 27-year-old isn’t reaping many benefits from his stay on the south coast, as evidenced by his meagre six appearances across all competitions this season. He will be dissatisfied with his lack of playing time after dropping to the Championship.
But his Saints debut didn’t assist his case either; the defender’s confidence was probably damaged by Sunderland’s 5-0 victory over them in the first few days of September.
His performance at the Stadium of Light was below standard, and he had a terrible debut for the south coast team. He even later admitted to the BBC that he was out of his element in this Wearside match.
latest information regarding Mason Holgate’s future
Nick Mashiter had already revealed that a transfer for Holgate by Sheffield United had collapsed because his parent club Everton had insisted on a loan fee in the latter stages of the discussions.
The Blades are still eager to get him to Bramall Lane, though, as reported by The Telegraph (via Goodison News).
According to the source, negotiations between the Toffees and Chris Wilder’s team are ongoing, which may indicate that Holgates departs St. Mary’s before the end of January.
It would be odd if the Saints weren’t ready to let Holgate go early because they have allowed important players go this season.
Additionally, they could be able to bring in a replacement using the money they made from player sales during the summer window.
It’s obvious that the Saints’ loanee isn’t making progress at St Mary’s, therefore it could be best for everyone if he goes this month.
It may be argued that a decision must be made quickly to allow Martin’s team to determine whether or not to hire a replacement.
Holgate needs to be decided as soon as possible because the Saints need to take care of themselves and they won’t want to run out of possibilities.
