Star Sharks confirms another new deal

Talented fullback Liam Ison has officially re-signed with the Cronulla Sharks.

The 19-year-old, who turns 20 next month, had already signed a contract until 2025 but has since extended it for another two years, meaning he will remain with the Shire until at least the end of 2027.

After leaving the Penrith Panthers to join the Sharks, Ison—who is regarded as one of the best young players in the sport—had a breakthrough season in the lower divisions this year, moving up from the Jersey Flegg to the NSW Cup and finally to the NRL.

In Round 21 against the North Queensland Cowboys, the young player earned his NRL debut at fullback in lieu of the suspended Will Kennedy, and he performed admirably at the highest level.

Over the next three seasons, he will likely add to his one NRL game and try to get Kennedy to wear his shirt.

“It’s unbelievable. “I’m ecstatic about my new contract,” Ison stated.

“This organisation has a unique quality, and I’m excited to be a part of it for the upcoming years.

“In every grade I played in this year, we had a pretty good squad. I’m honoured to be a part of the incredible depth that exists at Cronulla.

“Here, everyone is welcome. Since everyone is together and you can chat to anyone about anything, there aren’t really any groups. Before I arrived, Fitzy and the other boys had established that culture. I’m just extremely grateful I’m staying part of it.”

Ison brought ‘very hard work’ to his game, according to Sharks football general manager Darren Mooney.

“Liam works extremely hard, is always striving to improve and has an old head on young shoulders,” Mooney stated.

“He has a promising future in the NRL and has handled every grade increase admirably. We’re happy he’s returned to our team and eager to see how he develops.”

Ison, who helped the Panthers win the Jersey Flegg Cup in 2022, participated in 17 NSW Cup games with the Newtown Jets in 2024, scoring 10 tries and dishing out 11 assists.
