Stoke City transfer fear dismissed as Plymouth third loan recalled

There were obvious replies from Plymouth Argyle supporters on social media when the announcement came through that Kaine Kesler-Hayden had been recalled from his loan by parent club Aston Villa. “Thanks for everything, Kaine,” said one. “Just don’t tell us you’re going to Stoke.” One Stoke fan even chipped in with: “I wasn’t aware we were in for a right-back.”

Such is the expectation of what might come next after Steven Schumacher left Home Park to become Stoke City head coach before star loanees Finn Azaz and Luke Cundle were recalled by Aston Villa and Wolves respectively. The former then went to Middlesbrough with Cundle making his Stoke debut in a 1-0 win at Rotherham on Saturday.

Kesler-Hayden, however, is an exception; at least for the time being, he won’t be joining another Championship team. Rather, he will be a part of Villa’s Premier League championship campaign and rival Poland international Matty Cash at right defender. The decision was made because Villa only selected eight replacements for their Sunday away draw against Everton, as opposed to the maximum nine.

Plymouth director of football Neil Dewsnip told the Plymouth Herald: “The reason Kaine has been recalled is to be part of Aston Villa’s first team squad. I am assured he is going nowhere else. We are already well down the line to finding a replacement, but I can’t tell you the name at the moment.”

Plymouth also confirmed last night that Lewis Warrington will return to parent club Everton due to injury

They are now down to two loans in their squad: defender Ashley Phillips (Tottenham Hotspur) and midfielder Darko Gyabi (Leeds United), who both made their debuts in a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
