Rumoured Sunderland managerial target Steven Schumacher has dismissed speculation linking him to the vacant role at the Black Cats, according to quotes supplied by Plymouth Live.
Earlier this week, the Championship team shocked everyone by dismissing Tony Mowbray after just one win in their previous five games. As they aim to rejoin the Premier League following a seven-year hiatus at the end of the current campaign, this has caused them to drop to ninth in the table and outside of the play-off spots.
The decision was made in advance of a difficult doubleheader against fellow promotion contenders West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United, which begins this Saturday. The 1-1 draw with Millwall over the weekend proved to be the last straw. The trip to The Den came after consecutive losses to Plymouth Argyle, now managed by the highly regarded Schumacher, and Huddersfield Town.
Following his heroics with the Pilgrims over the previous two years, the 39-year-old was instantly positioned as one of the favourites to succeed the departing Mowbray. After earning an incredible 101 points to win League One the previous season, they appear to have solidified their status in the second division, where they are now comfortably positioned in 16th place.
Several clubs have expressed interest in him recently due to his work at Home Park, and he has previously been connected to multiple Championship positions. The most recent is Sunderland, but the midfielder who previously played for Bradford City and Bury has declined to comment on the rumours. Prior to the trip to table-toppers Leicester City on Saturday, Schumacher stated:
It has previously occurred. To tell the truth, I usually stay out of it. “Don’t bother me until you need to,” is what I tell my agent, and he complies. No, I’m not aware of anything because it has no effect on me at all.
Proceeding, the manager stated that he was touched by the attention that supporters expressed regarding
“I’m in the right place right now, but when the right opportunity presents itself, I’ll know and we’ll sense it.” I’m constantly learning, making mistakes, improving my decision-making skills, and honing my tactical abilities.
We wanted this league to test us constantly, and that’s how I feel about it. That’s what we anticipated. It’s great that the staff as a whole is learning. I’m not even that old yet. I have been a manager for two years, so I’m not in any hurry to relocate. I’m in an amazing position.
Although Schumacher is naturally associated with the Sunderland position, it is not believed that the Black Cats are actively pursuing him. Plymouth will benefit greatly from this because they don’t want to jeopardise their season by looking for a new manager.
The 39-year-old is obviously content with his current situation and is aware that time will work in his favour in obtaining a “bigger” job. His entire attention will be on keeping the Pilgrims in the Championship for the time being.
