Tony Docherty ‘disappointed in the officials’ over crucial call as Dundee boss laments side’s ‘uphill battle

Given how many careless goals Dundee is giving up, Tony Docherty acknowledges that the team is giving itself a mountain to climb in every match.

Kevin Nisbet and Topi Keskinen both scored goals Wednesday, giving the Dark Blues a 2-0 deficit over Aberdeen at Dens.

Through the efforts of substitute Seb Palmer-Houlden, Dundee was able to rally, but the Dons had already done the damage and were clinging on to win.

Dundee is now in second place in the Premiership as a result of the outcome, and Docherty is certain that everyone must accept responsibility in the games before the break begins at Ross County next week.

“We are not giving ourselves the best opportunity to win football matches because we have been negligent,” the manager said.

“I must admit that there was a tug on Antonio Portales during the first goal, and I am particularly upset with the officials for that.

The referee was informed that it was a foul by the fourth official, who actually called it out.

“My staff told me that the goal wouldn’t stand because there was a pull, but I’m not sure if it went to VAR or if they checked it.

Nevertheless, we must accept accountability for our own role in it. We had a mountain to climb after that, and we missed the second goal.

“We let the ball go to the striker’s feet from a throw-in, and even though we get it back, we lose possession. The boy then makes a fantastic strike, but the ball needs to be under more pressure.”

We immediately regained a goal. Although it was an excellent goal, it isn’t the problem because we are currently ranked third in the in the league for goals scored.

“We are simply making it harder for ourselves to win games with each match.

“We now have seven games left against opponents in our immediate vicinity.

It is crucial that we avoid overanalysing it, but we must accept greater responsibility for it because it is the result of our own errors and carelessness.

Even if Dundee is in 11th place, Docherty maintains that he is still looking up the way.

Then he said: “Yes. We must ensure that there is a genuine communal obligation to do more in order to win football games as the games draw to a close.

In the 29th minute, Aberdeen took the lead. Kristers Tobers was given the lead by Nisbet, who rifled home the rebound after Jeppe Okkels’ cross reached him. Dundee keeper Jon McCracken saved Tobers’ first attempt.

With a truly amazing goal in the 52nd minute, the Dons increased their lead. Keskinen accelerated before launching an unstoppable curling blow past McCracken from a height of thirty yards.

But two minutes later, Josh Mulligan crossed from the right, and substitute Palmer-Houlden fired into the goal to give the Dark Blues a decisive lead.

Aberdeen managed to hold on and win all three points, though.
