Browns star Elijah Moore should retire after his horror head injury that left the wide receiver appearing to convulse on the turf.
That’s according to Dr Bennet Omalu, the pathologist who is credited with discovering Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in former NFL players.
Moore was released from hospital on Friday after he was left twitching involuntarily on the ground before being ruled out of Thursday night’s win over the Jets with concussion.
Moore appeared to hit the ground face down after being tackled by CJ Mosely and, as cameras captured him lying on his back, his arms and hands seemed to scarily jolt up into the air.
Omalu – the inspiration behind the Will Smith movie ‘Concussion’ – told TMZ he would advise the Browns WR to retire.
That is my recommendation,’ he said. ‘He was having a seizure… a seizure is a manifestation of brain damage, brain injury… that is permanent damage.’
Moore has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol and Omalu said that if the 23-year-old chose not to retire, then he should at least miss the rest of the season.
The Browns are primed for a run towards the Super Bowl but the doctor believes Moore should sit out at least three months of action.
‘Given what I saw in that video, he should be benched for rest of the season,’ Omalu added. ‘For at least three months.’
Thursday’s 37-20 victory, spearheaded by quarterback Joe Flacco, clinched the Browns’ place in the playoffs.
Earlier in the night, Moore caught an eight-yard touchdown. He has amassed 59 receptions for 640 yards and two touchdowns this season.
The team has 10 days before its last game of the regular season, on the road to Cincinnati Bengals. The Wild Card round of the playoffs begins on January 13.
