Wigan Athletic have a busy summer ahead as they try to build on their 12th place finish in League One.
Several players from Wigan Athletic are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents this summer.
The Latics, who were demoted from the Championship the previous season, plan to eventually return to the second division.
Shaun Maloney’s side have yet to reveal their retained list as Football League teams start to look ahead. Here is a look at what to expect from the DW Stadium…
Kerr to leave?
Jason Kerr, a defender, has an uncertain future as his contract expires in late June. According to a Press and Journal story, he was connected to a move out during the January transfer window, with Aberdeen reportedly showing interest.
The 27-year-old, who is a former Scotland youth international, has played for St Johnstone in the past and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him travel back up the border again in his career. He joined the squad he is currently on in 2021.
Players to be released
Left-back Tom Pearce didn’t start for Wigan Athletic in their final two games against Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers with Liverpool loanee Luke Chambers getting in ahead of him. Whether he decides to stay put is still to be determined.
Goalkeeper Ben Amos lost his status as number one to the highly-rated Sam Tickle and may need to depart to receive regular game time somewhere.
Callum McManaman only signed a 12-month deal when he returned back to the Latics and at the age of 33, Maloney needs to weigh up whether to keep his services.
Josh Magennis has played in 42 games this season and scored 10 goals. He has received a lot of playing time. However, like McManaman, he is 33 and doesn’t hold much worth in the transfer market.
Potential extensions
Wigan Athletic has given Stephen Humphrys a fresh lease on life, and they will do all in their power to hang onto him. This past winter, he was connected to Wrexham, according to a TEAMtalk article.
This week, the striker wrote on X that the guys in the dressing room are the “best group of lads” he has ever been around.
Jordan Jones and the Latics are negotiating an extension. “In terms of the future, the club and my agent are working hard together, so let’s see what happens,” he wrote in a post on X.
