- With star goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo expected to miss weeks rather than months, Wrexham’s chances of winning a double promotion have been strengthened. After breaking his jaw in the first half of a recent 2-2 draw away to Harrogate Town, the 22-year-old saw a specialist on Monday.
After taking a knee to the face, Okonkwo appeared to be in a lot of pain and was substituted by veteran deputy Mark Howard in goal.
- Mail Sport is aware that, per medical advice, Okonkwo is now anticipated to have minor surgery.Although there is no precise timeline for his return—he might be able to do so sooner if he wears a mask or other headgear to support his jaw—sources suggest that he will likely need to miss several weeks of rest.
- When he slid into Josh March, the Harrogate striker in the first half, the on-loan custodian showed bravery.Later, manager Phil Parkinson revealed that Okonkwo was “dazed at half time,” and the medical staff had advised taking him off.
- Later on, it was emphasised that it was not “serious” or as horrible as initially thought, and it is hoped he will return early in the coming year.Parkinson will therefore not be compelled to search for a new custodian in January through transfers.
- Now that Rob Lainton has been sidelined due to injury for the entire season, Parkinson is down to just two senior goalkeepers: Howard and Luke McNicholas.Since joining Wrexham this season, Okonkwo—whose contract with Arsenal expires in the summer—has been a revelation, unseating Ben Foster and Howard as the team’s starting striker. Okonkwo will be free agent.
The Dragons, who won the Vanarama National League last season with a record points total set by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, two Hollywood stars, are aiming for a double promotion.
- Parkinson’s team is currently in third place in League Two, five points behind Stockport County. They will play Shrewsbury Town, one of their fiercest rivals, in the FA Cup third round.
