Wrexham offer as baseball star signs biggest contract ever

Wrexham AFC’s co-owner has sent an ambitious message to MLB star and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani with football’s upcoming January transfer window just days away

Rob McElhenney cheekily offered former Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani the chance to sign for Wrexham AFC just moments before the MLB free agent agreed to join the Los Angeles Dodgers

Ohtani’s future in baseball has been a topic of much contention ahead of his departure from the Angels after five years. The 29-year-old is one of the most prolific two-way players in recent history thanks to his abilities both at bat and in pitching – often compared to the likes of seven-time World Series champion Babe Ruth.

He received a lot of offers on the table, and after his contract expired, he decided to join his former team’s crosstown rivals. He has broken the record set by his former teammate Mike Trout, who had a 12-year contract worth about £340 million, with his new deal, which is reportedly worth $700 million (£557 million).

Shortly before MLB free agent Shohei Ohtani agreed to join the Los Angeles Dodgers, Rob McElhenney cheekily offered him the opportunity to sign for Wrexham AFC.

The future of Ohtani in baseball has generated a lot of debate.

Another stated that the versatile player could contribute to the game in multiple capacities: “He would lead the league in goals scored and be the best goalie in the league.”

Though it’s obvious that McElhenney is making a playful jab, Ohtani isn’t the only player who has found success after switching sports.

Before turning to baseball, Eddy Alvarez made an impression as a 5000-meter speed skater, winning silver at the 2014 Winter Olympics. His decision paid off as he helped the US baseball team win a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He is an infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers at the moment.

Another example is Formula One racer Alex Zanardi, who also won fifteen IndyCar races during his motorsport career. But in 2001, he suffered a terrible accident during a race that required the amputation of both of his legs. He would go on to compete in paracycling, winning three gold medals at the Paralympic Games, two silver, and twelve gold medals at World Championships.

Conversely, this has also happened; Michael Jordan’s foray into baseball is a well-known example. The six-time NBA champion struck out 114 times in 127 games while with the Birmingham Barons. Jordan intended to rejoin the Chicago Bulls, the team he won his last three NBA titles with.

Although Ohtani won’t be wearing a Wrexham jersey anytime soon, McElhenny may be able to watch from a distance when the Red Dragons play their next League Two match against Colchester United on Saturday, December 16.
