HULL FC have appointed former Warrington Wolves player Richie Myler as their director of rugby after he announced his retirement as a player with York.
York confirmed half-back Myler, who made 145 appearances for The Wire between 2010 and 2015, had retired after struggling to recover from elbow surgery and Super League club Hull have announced the 33-year-old has signed a three-year deal in a new role with them.
A statement on Hull’s website read: “Hull FC are pleased to confirm the appointment of Richie Myler as director of rugby on a three-year contract.
“Former Super League player Myler joins the club immediately after announcing his retirement, most recently featuring for York.
“He will now take up a new position with the Black & Whites, overseeing all on-field performance aspects of the senior and academy teams, including rugby operations, recruitment, and the management of the club’s coaching staff.”
Myler, who represented England and Ireland during his career, spent five years at both Warrington and Leeds and also had spells at first club Widnes, Salford and Catalans Dragons before he joined Championship side York last November on a one-year deal.
Myler added: “I would like to say thank you to York Knights and especially Clint Goodchild for the recent opportunity the club gave to me and in understanding and supporting the reasons for my departure to take on the role of director of rugby at Hull FC.
“Rugby League has been my life since being four-years-old, however, with a few unfortunate injuries in the last nine months and the sudden opportunity that has arisen to work with Adam Pearson at Hull FC is simply an opportunity too exciting to turn down.”
Hull parted company with Tony Smith and assistant Stanley Gene last week after winning only one of their first seven Super League games and said Myler was already involved in the process of appointing a replacement.
