Sam Burgess address ‘old habits’ despite latest Wolves win’

Burgess secured his second victory as Warrington Wolves head coach as they defeated Castleford Tigers 30-8.

Sam Burgess, the coach of Warrington, believed his team had been in a fight following their 30-8 victory over Castleford in the Betfred Super League on Friday. At the Halliwell Jones Stadium, the Wolves secured their second win under new coach Burgess after overcoming a poor start and a late comeback by Castleford.

Burgess remarked, “I thought we were good in patches.” Bravo to them. They had us cornered early on with some excellent rugby. After that, I felt like we handled the game effectively, but they made it a little tedious.

We had to play too since they came to play and gave it their all. There are aspects of the game that require improvement. A few of the old habits were beginning to resurface. Even though we still have some work to do, we are quite pleased with the two points because, in my opinion, Castleford performed well.

Josh Simm’s score gave the Tigers the early advantage, but Warrington responded with two outstanding Matty Ashton finishes. The hosts took the lead with to more tries from Joe Philbin and Matt Dufty, but Cas answered with a try from Innes Senior, who put more pressure on Warrington before Josh Thewlis completed the scoring.

Burgess expressed satisfaction that the match proceeded without any issues following several red and yellow cards for head contact during the first two rounds of the competition. “I thought it was a better spectacle – less penalties, no cards, more like a game of rugby league,” the former England forward remarked.
