SAM Burgess insists Round Five opponents London Broncos will be given “the respect they deserve” by his Warrington Wolves players this weekend.
Irrespective of what other peoples opinions are, they must be given the whole respect they deserves.
Additionally, he thinks the men from the capital should be given more credit than they have, even if they have had a losing start to the season.
Following a close loss against Hull FC, London’s first four games have seen them suffer crushing losses to St Helens, Catalans Dragons, and Wigan Warriors—the top three teams in the Super League in 2023—after they upset the odds to win promotion from the Championship previous year.
Many predict a commanding Wire victory on Sunday because they are giving up just over 40 points per game on average.
Burgess says his team will play with “ferocity,” but he thinks their opponents will be more dangerous than most people realise.
He remarked, “If you look at who they’ve played, they’ve had Hull, Wigan, St Helens, and Catalans.”
“Hull won the game right before the half, Catalans scored ninety percent of the time and were very clinical, St. Helens defended well, and Wigan started the game slowly (I believe the score was 22-16 at halftime) before pulling away in the second half.
“They’re a young, inexperienced team that’s still finding its feet, but they’re a tough team, and they’ve faced more challenges this year than any other club.”
“They should receive a little more credit than they have, as they have participated in every game and achieved respectable results.
We’re treating this game with the respect it merits since they have some excellent players.
“It really comes down to getting our game right again because we need to improve on certain areas from the Hull KR game.
“We’ll treat London with the respect they deserve, but we’ll bring our own ferocity to the game.”
The Wire will want to extend their winning streak to four games and maintain their positive early-season performance under Burgess if everything goes according to plan in the capital.
The inexperienced head coach was also eager to explain the context of his constantly-evolving lineup, which will include at least two changes on Sunday due to the absence of Lachlan Fitzgibbon (family bereavement) and George Williams (ankle).
Considering that there hasn’t been much continuity, I’m happy with the team, he remarked.
Every game we’ve played, our halves combination has changed, and we haven’t really had any consistency on either end; this week, our left edge will change, while our right edge has fluctuated a lot.
“A lot has changed, but we’ve managed it well and completed the task at hand.
“Leon (Hayes) is a half who has played in the previous three games and has really well managed them. He is only ten games into his career, if that.
“Matt Dufty has been outstanding, and there have been some strong performances in the middle.”
