Watford should not brush off interest from Newcastle United and Brighton interest in Yaser Asprilla, as the player could leave the club in the summer.
Yaser Asprilla of Watford has drawn a lot of attention since joining the team, as his performances since moving from Colombia to England have impressed several elite clubs.
The Colombian arrived to the Hornets in 2022 after leaving Envigado FC, and he has since established himself as a vital player on the team.
Since joining Watford, the midfield player has made 68 appearances, providing five goals and seven assists. He became used to playing in the Championship quite fast, and at the age of twenty, he is among the best young players in the division.
Given that Watford is presently ranked 11th in the league, it appears doubtful that the team will make a run at promotion this season.
But Asprilla has made an impression on a lot of teams, and with two goals in his previous two games, the 20-year-old has shown some remarkable form. These clubs may be considering making a bid for the young player during the summer transfer window.
Asprilla has reportedly attracted interest from a number of clubs
Numerous clubs in the top divisions have been connected to Asprilla due to his impressive achievements in the Championship.
This month, Sport revealed that Barcelona was interested in signing the 20-year-old. The Spanish team wants to follow Real Madrid’s path and buy the stars of the future rather than superstars.
This increased the rumours about Asprilla’s future, since no deal ever happened despite links to Brighton and Newcastle for the player during the summer.
To the pleasure of both management and supporters, Asprilla even denied any rumours that he intended to quit the team.
With this admission, he will become even more of a fan favourite, and should the club choose to sell the forward in the summer, they will be able to fetch a higher price.
During the January transfer window, Everton reportedly made an offer for Asprilla, which Watford rejected because it was too low. Everton was also interested in the midfielder.
Everton and Sporting of Portugal were rumoured to be interested in Asprilla as well. Given that the Portuguese League has already hosted some elite Colombian players, like Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez, this would have been a wise choice for the player.
There is no question that he will be able to transition to the Premier division or La Liga with the same ease that he did from the Colombian division to the Championship.
Asprilla possesses the ability needed to excel in the upper divisions. He manages more long passes per ninety minutes than 96% of players in the league, and his long ball accuracy is among the top 15% in the Championship.
Given how clinical he is in front of goal, his six goals this season have come from a projected goals total of just 4.30. It seems like Asprilla can increase his tally and develop into a more reliable goal scorer if a more formidable squad gives him more opportunities.
Watford has also had trouble holding onto a regular position in the Asprilla squad. Despite playing on the left flank, right wing, or centre, he has already made 16 starts this season. His performance may be impacted by his frequent position changes, and a team that settles on a spot and sticks with it may see even greater success from the Colombian.
Watford will probably have to pay a hefty price to let Asprilla go. Clubs will need to step up if they want to get the forward in the summer because we already saw claims that they turned down an offer from Everton in January.
According to reports, it might cost more than £40 million to sign him, which would be prohibitive for many teams. But given Asprilla’s potential thus far at Watford, the Hornets shouldn’t rule out a serious interest in the player.
Asprilla would probably cost that type of money to sign, thus it is unlikely that a team like Sporting or Everton will be able to afford it; however, Brighton, Newcastle, and Barcelona will probably be able to afford it.
It appears like manager Valerien Ismael is taking his time to let the player go based on the fee that was mentioned. But the money being suggested may change Watford’s fortunes and enable them rebuild into a Championship team capable of contending for the crown.
They should thus not be dismissive of their interest in Asprilla and be willing to consider a transfer if the proper offer for the 20-year-old is made.
