Albion were already two goals ahead and cruising when Phillips, 32, missed an open goal despite being only inches away from the goal line.
Because it was more akin to a clearance, BBC Radio WM pundit Brown couldn’t even bring himself to call the former Scotland international’s play a miss.
On Saturday night, November 25, at 6:42 p.m., Bomber Brown said on BBC Radio WM, “I tell you what, he won’t sleep tonight, Phillips.”
“I will be reviewing that miss numerous times.
“I don’t believe he overlooked it. Isn’t he getting close to the goal line?
“It’s great play from Jed Wallace on that far side.”
BBC Radio WM commentator Steve Hermon then said: “Unbelievable from Matt Phillips. Three goals this season and you’d say that was the easiest chance to get a fourth goal of the season.”
If you want to be super kind to Phillips, you could probably say that Ipswich goalkeeper Václav Hladký got a slight touch on the ball as Wallace crossed it into the box.
You can also chalk it off as not being very important because Albion were 2-0 up when it happened and the game finished with the same scoreline.
But there’ll always be that ‘what if’ surrounding that miss.
It makes sense that Phillips will face criticism if that occurs on another day when we are down 0-0 late in the game or protecting a late advantage and end up drawing or losing.
Although Brown believes the former Blackpool man will have nightmares about that miss, it really shouldn’t matter and should be as unimportant as water off a duck’s back.
He just cannot afford to repeat the action.
Still, Phillips enjoys capturing significant moments in front of the Brummie Road.
