West Brom want to sign “very special” player
After a successful loan stint at the Hawthorns, Mikey Johnston is expected to secure a permanent deal with West Brom in the summer, according to a recent update from Football Insider. According to the source, Celtic wants at least £6 million for the winger, and the Baggies are “exploring a deal” for him while “weighing up the possibility of a permanent deal or another loan”.
It continues by stating that “Carlos Corberan’s side are expected to move players on to raise funds in the transfer window, in an attempt to fund their summer business” .
Given the influence Johnston made after joining from Celtic, it makes perfect sense for West Brom to sign him permanently this summer. The 25-year-old earned two assists and seven goals in 17 Championship starts. The former goalkeeper Joe Hart, who spoke of the luck of the Republic of Ireland in acquiring the Scot when he switched from playing for Scotland, has also praised the player.
“Ireland is going to get someone who might be quite special. He is quite talented and possesses the kind of attributes that can entice people to get up from their chairs. That was evident the instant I saw him, but he has had a terrible run of injuries.”
It would be surprising if Johnston didn’t try to get a trade over the line, given that he seems more likely to play a major role for West Brom than Celtic. Making the move permanently would undoubtedly be better for his career.
