James Ward-Prowse said that being left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad was a major disappointment.
West Ham’s Ward-Prowse is in top form.
Was not selected for the England team.
The midfielder expressed his dissatisfaction.
WHAT OCCURED? For the next matches against Australia and Italy, England boss Gareth Southgate has chosen to continue with his reliable midfield warriors Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson. While Philips has been a marginal player for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, the former Liverpool midfielder has moved to the Saudi Pro League to play for Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq.
Ward-Prowse, on the other hand, has two goals and six assists in eight appearances for West Ham, with his most recent goal coming against Freiburg in the Europa League. Despite his excellent form, Southgate chose to overlook the midfielder, leaving him disappointed.
WHAT THEY SAID: “Yeah, huge disappointment [not being selected for England duty],” he told TNT Sports.
“As I’ve stated many times in interviews, you can only control what you can control as a player, and that’s performing at a level you believe is good enough to make the squad. It’s critical to play on a regular basis, and I’m currently doing both. I feel like I’m in a good spot, but things aren’t going my way. But I’m focused on West Ham, giving it my all for the club and enjoying every minute of it, so long as that continues.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Ward-Prowse’s last international outing was a 0-0 draw against Italy in the Nations League in June 2022. He has made 11 international games and has two goals and one assist to his name.
WHAT COMES NEXT? Ward-Prowse will return to Premier League action against Newcastle United on Sunday.
